It started with a little light
coming from the glass.

I was thirteen when I had my first aquariums. By seventeen, there were five in my bedroom. During a difficult time in my life, I would lie in the dark, listening to music, watching the fish move through the only steady light in the room.

They calmed me down. They were quieter than anything else I knew. Photographing them came later. In many ways, it is still the same habit: staying close, watching in silence, and noticing what another person might walk past.

BETTA SPLENDENS / HALFMOONA fraction of a second. Hours of waiting.

They are always moving.
I wait for the moment.

The work happens at night, in a small room. A camera on a tripod. A flash angled away from the glass. I stand one meter away and wait.

The fish do not pose, and they never stop moving. I wait for the fraction of a second when a fin opens, a body turns, and the light falls just right. A single photograph can take hours. Many evenings end with nothing.

Against deep black, the distractions disappear. What remains is the animal: its color, its shape, its unmistakable presence.

MORE THAN A BEAUTIFUL FISH

He knew who fed him.
He hated my dog.

I kept this Oscar for five years. He recognized everyone who fed him. Whenever my dog came near the tank, he would attack the glass, mouth wide open, willing to bite through it.

Spend enough time with a fish and you stop seeing just a species. You begin to see someone you know.
